The award winning author of The Phoenix Gone, the Terrace Empty, and of Dwarf Bamboo, Chin defines her existence as a
first-generation Asian-American woman, contrasting ancient and contemporary images of China and America. She is on the
faculty of the MFA program at San Diego State University.

Taiwanese-American, a guest speaker who survived the event at the age of 19, and a candlelight vigil to remember the

Culture in the Mirror

When images of attractiveness in the U.S. are displayed, rarely are features of APAs ever seen. What are the effects that
this might have on self-concept and connection to culture? This talk will focus on the psychological research in this area
of attractiveness, yet provide opportunity for discussion and exchange of experience and ideas by participants.

This performance is a humorous and poignant mix of stories that give vivid insight into the Asian, Latino, and African
American experience. Using theater, music, and dance, three artists open windows to their own world through their personal
tales. Though each slice may be different, "rice, frijoles, and greens" join to make a statement that entertains while
enlightens, taking audiences beyond cultural borders.

Professor Wu will be speaking about her biography of Dr. Margaret Chung (l889-l959), the first American born woman of
Chinese descent to become a physician. Wu's research on Chung provides a case study for analyzing social attitudes toward
race, gender, and sexuality.
