Asian Pacific American Children's Book Display at The Center for Children's Books, Graduate School of Library and Information Science, 501 E. Daniel St., Rm 24, Champaign. Almost 100 books will be displayed through all of March.
March 1
Open House by the Asian American Cultural Center and the Asian American Studies Program — 1-3:00 pm at 1208/1210 W. Nevada St., Urbana. Come learn about the weekly programs at the Asian American Cultural Center and what Asian American Studies courses are available in Fall 2006. Tours and refreshments will be provided.
Asian American Awareness Month Opening Reception featuring Radio Personality Minya Oh, a.k.a. "Miss Info" of New York's Urban Radio Station Hot 97 by the Asian American Awareness Month Committee and the Korean American Student Association — 3:00 pm at the Asian American Cultural Center. Come celebrate this year's Asian American Awareness Month and learn about all the events happening around campus.

"Ethan Mao" Film Screening by Asian American Studies Minor Club and Asian American Studies Program — 6:30 pm at Location: TBA. Director Quentin Lee will host a film screening of his latest feature film followed with an interactive discussion with the audience.

Building Critical Consciousness among Asian American College Students: Challenges and Possibilities by Asian American Studies Program and Educational Policy Studies — 1:30-3:30 pm at 242 Education, Keith Osajima, Professor of Race and Ethnic Studies at the University of Redlands. Looks at the complex configuration of conditions that often make it difficult for Asian American students to develop a pan-Asian critical consciousness.

Tired of the Model Minority Myth? [Food for Thought Lunch Series] by the Asian American Cultural Center — Noon at the Asian American Cultural Center. Come to an informal talk/discussion with Professor Keith Osajima about the model minority myth and how it can affect the lives of Asian American students.
What is a Tropical Gothic? Colonial Modernity and Revolution in Nineteenth-Century Philippines by the Asian American Studies Program — 10:00-11:30 pm at Asian American Studies Program/Asian American Cultural Center Conference Room. Professor John D. Blanco of the University of California at Irvine. Analyzes the intersection between colonialism and modernity in the Philippines during the nineteenth century through the examination of two modes by which the present was understood in terms of the past.
Iron Chef: Lumpia Cook off by Philippine Student Association — 6-10:00 pm at the Asian American Cultural Center. Witness a fun-filled competition for the best lumpia (Filipino eggrolls) that Champaign-Urbana has to offer.

"On the Cusp of Phoenix Rising" with a performance by Anida Yoeu Esguerra by the Asian American Awareness Month Committee, the Illini Union Board : Asian American Programs and the Asian American Artists' Collective — 7:00 pm at the Illini Union Courtyard Cafe. Asian American student spoken word artists will open for performing artist and alum Anida Yoeu Esguerra for her show, a combining of poetry and performance with mixed media.

Illinois Taiwanese American Student Association Conference by the Taiwanese American Students Club — Schools from all over the Midwest gather and learn, share and discuss issues related to Taiwan and Taiwanese Americans. "Making Data Count," [Food for Thought Lunch Series] by the Asian American Cultural Center with members from the South Asian American Policy and Research Institute (SAAPRI) — Noon at the Asian American Cultural Center. Using its landmark publication "Making Data Count" published in 2005, this workshop will show how hard data can be used to garner resources, formulate policy, influence legislation.
"FOBs, Whitewashed, AZN: Exploring Relationships within the Asian American Community" by the Counseling Center — 6:30 pm at the Asian American Cultural Center. Explore ways that we as Asian Americans use stereotypes about each other to create divisions within our community.

Passport to Asia by the University of Illinois Extension 4-H Cultural Club — 11:00 am-2:00 pm at University of Illinois Extension Auditorium, 801 N. Country Fair Dr., Champaign, IL. A community service project coordinated by Asian American students to increase young people's awareness about Asian countries, cultures, traditions, and culture. Free and open to everyone. Unmasking the Truth by the Asian American Cultural Center, Counseling Center, La Casa Cultural Latina, and the Sexual Assault Awareness Month Committee — 6-8:00 pm at Asian American Cultural Center, 1210 West Nevada St. An arts workshop in which women produce masks of how Latina and Asian American women perceive sexual assault/violence against women operates in their communities and/or lives. The mask workshop, in particular, focuses on the silence regarding issues of sexual violence in Latina and Asian American communities and on how women are forced to mask the pain of assault.

Illinois Chinese Adopted Siblings Program by Taiwanese American Students Club. Parent program as well as a sibling program of Chinese adopted children paired with a Chinese or Taiwanese undergraduate student to build and foster important relationships.
